Creature Creation: A Bestiary of Fantastical Insects - With Escher Cattle

Students will undertake the process of creating strange and unreal creatures, using insect anatomy and speculative biology as frameworks for natural history illustration. The course will culminate in a short book of finished illustrations and descriptions of student-created creatures.

  • WEEK 1: Learning to draw what's there: Natural History Illustration as an art form and drawing from real life and reference images

  • WEEK 2: Understanding form and function of insects: A primer on insect anatomy, ecology and evolution, interesting structures and how/why we think they came to be

  • WEEK 3: Putting it all together: Imagining new worlds and how insects might change (or have already changed) to suit them; visualization tools (photobashing, etc)

  • WEEK 4: Creating the bestiary: Applying the skills of science and natural history illustration to create, depict and describe strange new animals
